The shimmery lead track off Journalism‘s forthcoming EP 1324 is not about the after-effects of rose thorns or a wistful frolic in a field of nettles. It’s about dickheads. “A Thousand Pricks” sounds perfectly blissed out, like a summer day spent driving with the windows down, catching sunspots in your DSLR on a picnic out of the urban sprawl.
A polished step forward from last year’s Denim Jesus, this track takes the Brooklyn four-piece’s sound further in the nü shoegaze direction. The title and lyrical content, however, calls to mind Robert Pollard’s pep-talk-to-self about dodging stabs in the back while entering an industry populated by assholes. Journalism’s “A Thousand Pricks” also covers the life of a musician dealing with dickheads but when the song rounds into the second verse, singing “Educated by the waiting line…everyone who came here long ago/They tell me how it’s gonna be” it seems like the band’s already at peace with the dangers (emotional or physical) and external noise caused by the pricks in the BK music scene and New York City as a whole.
